Growing up in NYC, every 4 years when the World Cup comes around, you start to see all ethnicities proudly supporting their countries teams. The TV ads change to coincide with the event as well as radio, print etc…. then you begin to see more and more people out playing soccer and get even more build up/coverage on TV… then theres people chanting their countries song or whatever on the train…. and more people come out to play soccer.. everywhere, WORLD CUP FEVER, CATCH IT… then the day after it’s over, no one knows what soccer is… and the sport goes into hibernation throughout the city for another 4 years.

Now, the super bowl is one of those events, it crosses lines and even if you never watch football and couldnt tell me who the sunday nfl countdown guys are or who mike ditka is… yo uare still watching the super bowl and trying to have conversations about it. Its ok the media is telling you to do so, on the homepage of this WordPress site alone… half of the featured articles/blogs were on super bowl related topics…there a commercials for upcoming commercials, which create hype and buzz and controversey of their own…. how many viewers are going to be watching nfl network during the offseason? i know of one… i always do.. but for most the super bowl is the end of the football season.

But the media’s ok… the olympics are right around the corner.

X-GAMES/OLYMPIC TEAM UP IN THE NEAR FUTURE?

Well… i dont know about that but it very well could happen. Since the inception of the X-Games (17yrs ago for summer 15yrs for winter) action sports has been thrown into the mainstream of america and majority of the international world. Making professional careers of all sorts practical, athletes, camera crews, lighting, on-camera talent, music directors all composed of a younger, “extreme” generation.

Not everyone is a team sports kind of person and the X-Games is the defining competition for most athletes in the action sports world(save the snowboarders who get to compete in the olympics… new school skiing is not yet in the Olympic Games). Over the years i know i have not become the only one who waits for the 4-day weekend broadcasts in the summer and winter….why? one word: INNOVATION

The level of athleticism and possession of large cojones (men and women) allows us, the un-gifted viewers to see amazing feats of human strength,determination and spirit.. broadcast straight to our living room. The X-Games are one of the highest grossing athletic competitions in the world, through sponsors, corporate affiliates and devoted fans it has created an action sports empire, and the future of sport…..

2020 WINTER X OLYMPICS.. A HYBRID OF TRADITIONAL WINTER ATHLETICS AND THE ACTION SPORTS OF THE YOUTH MOVEMENT…. WATCH FOR IT…

The Sexy side of Jeep

Dont know who’s watching out there, but recently i have been seeing Jeep/Chrysler commercials that are specifically targeted towards women. As in, “After i get my hair and nails done, i wanna let loose, i dont care how much i paid for a blow dry” i live, i ride, i am jeep.

The commercial is chalk full of very attractive and professional looking women, tearing around the woods and the dunes in there topless Jeep Wrangler’s and buisiness suits… Jeep’s always been supported by the action sports community… now they are EXTREME-Ly Sexy, because after a long, hard day of being “pampered” and treated unfairly at the workplace…. women want to feel sexy driving home…..through the woods….or the desert…. or the frozen tundra….

It’s the REALLY Real World

So. MTV’s reality show pioneer, The real World, has always been a consistent source of comic relief. Through the power of editing and (low intelligence) we have watched some of the most annoying, disrespectful, angry, slutty people make fools of themselves for the last 15-20 yrs. It’s great right? so why this rant you ask?

I have always appreciated in show product placement. It has always been a subtle, yet effective marketing tool. T.R.W has taken it above and beyond subtle and are now shoving it in your face on this show. I find it a bit suspect that the only place the housemates eat is Subway. Also, when they go into the restaurant they leave you with a nice close up of the Subway Logo and a crispy clear audio track of the housemates ordering. Not just a Spicy Italian… but a flatbread veggie for the ladies(creating a classier dining experience), and a “five dollar foot long”… and boy do they sound excited!

all i know is it makes me want subway EVEN LESS… didn’t help the fact that i pick the local falafel spot for a better alternative over Subway every time for the last 3 years. EAT UP CHUMPS

Redbull is the king of Marketing

So, i’ve been at 3 different bars on 3 seperate occasions in the past few months and each time i end up with my attention fixed on a Redbull Promo video. They have taken “extreme” to another level. With a seemingly endless suplly of adrenaline junkies out there, Redbull has created dozens of contests, encompassing all disciplines…. from extreme downhill ice skating, to urban soccer, breakdancing to big mountain, back country skiing.

Not only does this video (which is a compilation of clips from all of their contests) make me want a redbull, but it makes me want to go online and search videos and info, and just spend time on the Redbull website. The people at Redbull are genius’ , they team up with icons of action sports, produce some of the highest calibur contests and special events, and laugh all the way to the bank.

I was looking for a downloadable version of the compilation video. couldn’t find one. So instead heres a few clips of some of the crazier stuff i found.

Commercial done for Speech

This was a project done for a small group communications class. We were given the task of coming up with a multi-dimensional ad campaign for selling Bose Headphones to men, ages 18-24. we did print, power point etc… but this was our commercial.

we wanted to make sure that we targeted all sections of our demographic… no matter what race, musical tastes, etc… we selected a song that was almost a crossover of sorts, just a solid beat and catchy melody… somewhat unidentifiable. If only all commercials were as good as this one. this was our take on an ad campaign and in no way does it represent or reflect any beliefs, ideas, or practices of the Bose Corporation… all in good fun.
